New England Patriots: Second biggest threat
The Pats seem to have their new franchise quarterback in Drake Maye. While he looked great at times, he also showed growing pains, and the last time the Patriots had a rookie quarterback look good, he got traded for a late-round pick a few years later.
However, Mike Vrabel is running the show now and he’s a very good coach. They beefed up their defense with big additions like Harold Landry, Milton Williams, and Carlton Davis. In a division with the reigning MVP, defense should be a priority. The team will likely focus more on the offensive side in the draft to support their young signal caller, and add some really nice talent.
Best Offseason Move: Signing WR Stefon Diggs
The Pats have been searching hard since last year to get an established receiver to Foxborough. They finally got one, in former Bills’ star, Stefon Diggs. While they may have overpaid a bit, 3 years for $63 million, the reality is, they had to.
Not a popular free-agent destination, and not willing to overtrade capital, they flashed some big cash to get Drake Maye a true number one. Even coming off a torn ACL, Diggs immediately upgrades the Pats receiving core and greatly helps out the growing Maye. Diggs flourished with an evolving Josh Allen and with a few solid options already there in Demario Douglas, and Kayshon Boutte, the Pats offense is vastly upgraded. A premium draft pick on a receiver makes it that much better too.
Worst Offseason Move: Releasing C David Andrews
While he played in just four games last season, the long-time Patriot center could have still helped the team. Cap-wise, it was a bit of a head-scratcher as well, saving just $2.76 million. For a team that already has offensive line issues, losing your anchor makes it an even larger issue. They gave a 34-year-old Morgan Moses a three-year deal worth $24 million, and while he was solid last year, his drop-off could come anytime soon. Michael Onwenu is a good building block, but they have work to do there and are relying on hitting on multiple draft picks to protect Maye.
