The Buffalo Bills have had two top players on offense the last couple of seasons in Josh Allen and James Cook, but there is a possibility that this duo could be facing a final season together on the same team. Cook is entering the last season of his rookie contract while Allen got a brand new six-year, $330 million deal this offseason. Should the Bills do whatever they can to keep Cook?
Throughout this offseason, the Bills have had ongoing contract drama with Cook as he has not been quiet whatsoever about it. He’s looking for atleast $15 million per season and while he should be in attendance for training camp, the chatter more than likely won’t be going away as the season approaches and goes on.
It’s a big topic of discussion amongst the Bills, as well as amongst fans because Cook is a dynamic player who is the second best player in Buffalo’s offense behind Allen. He has clearly been the best back the Bills have had with Allen under center and since LeSean McCoy was with the Bills.
Whether Buffalo pays him, or someone else does, Cook could get himself a great deal at some point. Will it be with Buffalo?
Latest power rankings shows why Bills should extend Cook sooner than later
Lou Scataglia from NFL Spin Zone recently listed the top QB/RB duos going into the 2025 season, and Scataglia has the duo of Allen and Cook at No. 2 overall. The duo that was ranked ahead of them was Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry.
"Josh Allen and James Cook are an excellent duo. Allen himself won the MVP in the 2024 NFL Season, and James Cook ran for 16 touchdowns on 207 carries. Cook seems to want a contract extension, and it might be wise for Buffalo to give him one."Lou Scataglia, NFL Spin Zone
Just this past offseason, the Bills extended Khalil Shakir, Terrel Bernard, and Christian Benford. All three of these players come from the same draft class as Cook. These three took team-friendly deals which is the biggest difference with Cook’s situation. It’s more than likely that Cook doesn’t take anything less which could put the Bills in a tough spot to keep the continuity together beyond the 2025 season.
Even though the Bills may not want to make that kind of financial commitment, they could be taking a risk of losing out on a great talent that takes the pressure off of the offense. This will be something for not just Bills fans, but for NFL fans to keep an eye on.
