Three players the Buffalo Bills should trade for

The Buffalo Bills and the 31 other teams begin to cut their rosters down to 53 players this week. And there may be some players on the roster bubble that the Bills don’t want to risk going to waivers and being claimed by another team. That means the Bills could trade away a late-round draft pick to ensure they get said player. The Bills don’t have many holes on their roster right now, but that won’t stop them from scouring the trade market in the coming days. Let’s take a look at three players Buffalo could trade for.

Quarterback Trey Lance

Lance may not be the flashiest acquisition after the preseason he had, but he’s likely the best quarterback to become available this week. Buffalo had interest in Lance before he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys last year, and with Mitchell Trubisky hurt, he would slide into the QB2 role.

The Cowboys are in a jam at the quarterback position. They just acquired Lance for a fourth-round pick, and has a cap hit of $5.3M in 2024, according to Spotrac. If they opt to trade him, Cooper Rush would become Dallas’ backup, and Jerry Jones would look like a fool for trading such a high draft pick in the first place. If they do look to trade him away though, Buffalo should come calling and offer a late-round draft pick.

Safety Jammie Robinson

Robinson was a fifth-round pick by the Carolina Panthers just last year. However, there’s a new regime in Carolina, one that has ties to Buffalo. If the Bills still view the safety position as a need, Brandon Beane could call his old friend Dan Morgan to inquire about Robinson. Last year, Robinson started in only two games, totaled 17 tackles, and played mostly on special teams.

The Bills haven’t had the best injury luck at the safety position, and acquiring Robinson allows them to make sure Cole Bishop, Damar Hamlin, and Mike Edwards return to the field at full health. Robinson is due a base salary of $915k and has a cap hit of $997k, according to Spotrac. Robinson would be a cheap option at worst to fill a need on special teams after Buffalo’s other safeties return to health.

Quarterback Jake Haener

The New Orleans Saints have a log jam at quarterback. Derek Carr is the starter right now, but they also drafted Haener in the fourth round last year, and Spencer Rattler in the fifth round this year. The loser of the QB2 battle in New Orleans likely will be traded away, and there’s a good chance that rookie Spencer Rattler will win the backup job. It would be hard to justify trading away a second-year quarterback, but it’s hard to understand a lot of New Orleans’ decision-making.

The Bills have a real need for a quarterback behind Josh Allen. With Mitchell Trubisky signing a two-year/$5.2M deal just a few months ago, Buffalo wouldn’t look towards another veteran acquisition. Finding somebody that they can hold on to for the next three or more years like Haener would be the ideal move.
