This under-the-radar Bills WR is quietly making lots of noise in training camp
By Brandon Ray
One of Brandon Beane’s special talents that he has displayed with the Buffalo Bills is getting great value from overlooked players. He has been able to find players like Matt Milano, Dion Dawkins, and Christian Benford who were overlooked coming into the league. It is no surprise that the Bills try to find value outside of the high-profile players whether it is in free agency, the later rounds of the NFL Draft, or even once the draft is completed.
The Bills’ front office may have discovered yet another hidden gem at wide receiver, the one position that everyone is concerned about with Buffalo. While most people outside of Buffalo have their eyes on guys Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir, and Curtis Samuel, there is one guy who was an undrafted free agent that could find himself on the 53-man roster come Week 1.
Tyrell Shavers is turning heads in training camp
If there is one under-the-radar player that Bills fans need to keep their eye on throughout preseason, it is wide receiver Tyrell Shavers. Outside of Coleman, Samuel, Shakir, Mack Hollins and maybe even Marquez Valdes-Scantling, this wide receiver room is open for any player to make. If the Bills decide to bring on six receivers as opposed to five, Shavers has a high chance at stealing a roster spot.
He has been making plays all over the field during training camp and has been having a “solid training camp” according to Alex Brasky.
The Buffalo offense is going to be somewhat brand new with a newer receiving core. Let’s face it, the only receiver that has caught a regular season pass from Josh Allen is Khalil Shakir. The rest are brand new and Shavers could have the opportunity to be one of them in the regular season.
Standing at 6’4”, Shavers is at a similar height as some of the other receivers on the roster. It looks like the Bills will have a certain style of their passing attack that will feature bigger receivers to make contested catches. Shavers is getting more recognition than guys like Valdes-Scantling and Chase Claypool throughout camp with his work ethic and ability to stay healthy.
Bills fans should not be surprised to see Shavers on the final 53-man roster, should Buffalo decide to make room for him. At the end of the day, the coaching staff and front office are going to need to decide if Shavers can be a difference maker or atleast great depth at the one position that they have been criticized for all offseason.
