4. Perry Fewell (2009)
Record: 3-4
Similar to Anthony Lynn, Perry Fewell had his first chance to be a head coach after the Buffalo Bills would fire their head coach midseason. Fewell joined the Bills in 2006 as the defensive coordinator on Dick Jauron's coaching staff and in 2009 the defense was the second best in the league against the pass in terms of yards allowed and passing touchdowns.
In the seven games as head coach, the Buffalo Bills were pretty competitive as they would get wins over the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, and Indianapolis Colts. In their losses, they kept the games close as three of those four losses were by seven or fewer points.
After the way the Bills finished the season, it would have made sense for Buffalo to consider Perry Fewell to be the permanent head coach. However, after struggles on the offensive side of the ball the Bills wanted to find a head coach with experience on that side of the ball and elected to go with Chan Gailey.
As for Perry Fewell, he would go on to have success as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants.
