Perfect Bills backup quarterback suddenly available thanks to Patriots

The Buffalo Bills have the right guy in the franchise quarterback role but it's the backup position that could use some help right now. Mitchell Trubisky re-signed with the team this offseason after spending the 2021 season backing up Allen.

Trubisky was injured during the Bills' preseason game against the Steelers and it felt like he'd miss some time after suffering that injury. That being said, the Bills opted to release Ben DiNucci ahead of the roster cut deadline, so that could be a sign that Trubisky isn't as beat up as previously thought.

If the team decided to go in another direction regarding quarterback depth, why not look toward a recent cut made by a division rival? The New England Patriots released Bailey Zappe ahead of the cut deadline and Zappe could be a nice depth piece for the Bills to have. Plus, there's the added bonus that he has a lot of knowledge about the Patriots.

Should Bills add Bailey Zappe to QB room?

The Patriots drafted Zappe in the fourth round of the 2022 draft out of Western Kentucky. Zappe had exploded onto the college football scene during his senior year in 2021, throwing for nearly 6,000 yards and 62 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. Of course, he played at Western Kentucky where the competition wasn't exactly SEC-level.

His professional career didn't go as smoothly as his college career did. Zappe started eight games for the Patriots over two years and threw for 11 touchdowns versus 12 interceptions. His numbers weren't awful for being a young backup quarterback on a bad team so he might be worth bringing to Buffalo to see if he can learn more from Allen.

While Trubisky previously served as a backup in Buffalo, Zappe is probably the better option between the two quarterbacks anyway. This move could end up leading to the Bills having a longer-term backup behind Allen if Zappe progresses in the role.

Bailey Zappe showed he had potential during his 2021 campaign at Western Kentucky but he had the unfortunate honor of playing for an abysmal Patriots team during his first two years in the league. Letting him sit behind Josh Allen could be enough to turn him into a high-quality backup for years to come.

The Bills have nothing to lose by throwing their hat into the ring for Zappe.
