Joe Brady must get Curtis Samuel more involved to open up Buffalo offense in Week 5

It’s time to turn the page for the Buffalo Bills, who suffered their first loss of the season in Week 4. Maybe it wasn’t their game to win, but they barely put up any fight against the Ravens. It was one of those losses where nothing went right. The offense couldn’t get much going and the defense never made adjustments to stop Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry.

When it comes to the offense, offensive coordinator Joe Brady and Sean McDermott received a lot of criticism in this game. There was one play in particular in the 3rd quarter where the Bills were slowly starting to crawl back into the game, and they called a trick play that turned into a disaster.

It started out with Josh Allen rolling out left and wide receiver Curtis Samuel taking the snap. Samuel took the snap, and pitched it back to Allen in which it was immediately stopped and Allen fumbled which caused a Buffalo turnover. That disastrous play completely took the Bills out of the game.

With Samuel, it was the only thing he will be remembered for in this game and his presence has been nonexistent for the Bills in the first month. Samuel had just two targets, finishing with two catches for eight yards. He also had one rushing attempt for seven yards.

It has been the same sad story for Curtis Samuel in 2024

Through four games, Samuel hasn’t had more than 3 catches in a game and no more than 22 receiving yards. He is averaging 12 yards per game. That is utterly ridiculous for a free agent signing who signed a three-year, $24 million deal.

Even though the Bills’ “everybody eats” mentality has been working this season, Week 4 proved that they need another game plan in case they can’t get anything going. Samuel should be part of that plan.

When Samuel and Joe Brady were in Carolina together, Samuel had his best year as a pro. He had 851 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns, 200 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. That productive Samuel is nowhere to be found and he is truly looking like a bust early on for the Bills.

As the Bills head into Week 5, Samuel needs to get more targets and just be more involved overall to help the offense move the ball. It is going to be very hard to see Samuel be limited once again, especially if the Bills continue their struggles in Houston.
