The Buffalo Bills matchup in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins could have significant ramifications towards the end of the season. While it is still early in the 2023 season, the Dolphins have a chance to build an early two game lead within the division over the Bills.

The Bills have begun the year with a 2-1 record with their only loss being against the New York Jets in Week 1. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins are 3-0 and with a win over the Bills move to 4-0 and would own the tiebreaker, at least for now, before their second matchup later in the season with Buffalo.

This game has plenty of playoff implications but it has the potential to be a historic game and one that breaks an NFL record that has been in place since 1966. The most points scored in an NFL game is 113, set in a game between Washington and the New York Giants which Washington won 72-41.

Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins are the Top 2 scoring offenses in the NFL

Entering Week 4, the Miami Dolphins lead the NFL in points scored with 130 thanks to a 70 point output in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos. However, the Bills rank second in the league in points scored with 91 total, one point ahead of the San Francisco 49ers, after back-to-back weeks with 35+ points.

The difference in this game could come down to which defense can slow down the opposing offense more. The Bills certainly have the advantage here as they rank second in the league in fewest points allowed with 11.7 points per game while the Miami Dolphins rank 21st, allowing 23.7 points per game.

The case can be made that the Dolphins offense is better than the Bills offense but the Bills defense is better than the Dolphins. The question becomes how much difference between these units.

While that won't be answered until Sunday afternoon, one thing is clear that there will be plenty of points scored in this game and a record from 1966 could be in trouble.
