The Buffalo Bills have been considered one of the best pass defenses in the NFL for years, often ranking number overall. The combo of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer can be argued as the best safety tandem in the league as well.

Pro Football Focus recently ranked each NFL team's secondaryBills' and listed the Buffalo Bills as the tenth best. It's interesting to me that PFF ranked this unit sixth in the league a season ago, and that was knowing that Tre'Davious White wouldn't return from ACL until after mid-season and the second corner spot projected to be rookie Kaiir Elam. Here is what PFF said about the Bills secondary heading into 2023.

"White has struggled with injuries the past two seasons, and the Bills' secondary as a whole was banged up a season ago. If this unit can put together a healthy season in 2023, expect a return to the top-tier form that saw this group put up a 90.6 coverage grade in 2021 and an 88.9 coverage grade in 2019."

This season, the Buffalo Bills will have a healthy Poyer and Hyde returning, plus White is now fully healthy and played like his old self down the stretch last season, so he seems to be all the way back. The other corner spot will be manned by either Christian Benford, who earned the starting nod last season before getting injured, or Elam who started to play the way a first-rounder should late in the season as well.

It would have made more sense if this unit was tenth heading into last season and sixth for 2023 but I don't write those articles for PFF. Also, not mentioned by PFF was the addition of safety Taylor Rapp, coming to the Bills via free agency.

With White, Elam, Benford, Taron Johnson, and Dane Jackson as the Bills' top five corners, they have more depth and talent than they've ever had. Add in the addition of Rapp with Hyde and Poyer, the safeties have some excellent depth as well. At worst, this unit should be top five this season.
