Buffalo Bills hire John Butler's successor as defensive backs coach
The Buffalo Bills and defensive backs coach John Butler have agreed to part ways, most likely due to him being passed on for the Bills' defensive coordinator job. Regardless of the reason for the decision, the Bills elected to go outside the organization for his replacement. The team announced that Jahmile Addae will be the new defensive backs coach. There are a couple of interesting points that stand out to me with this hire.
First of all, Addae comes over from the Miami Hurricanes, where he coached NFL draft prospect Kamren Kinchens. Kinchens was named to the All-American team this past season under the tutelage of Addae. The Bills have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Kinchens in the first or second round of April's NFL draft.
The second thing I like about the addition of Addae is what he might be able to do for the Bills' former first-round selection Kaiir Elam. I'm still in on Elam for now as we head towards the 2024 season. Elam was battling an ankle injury that significantly set him back last season, and it sounds like Elam and former DB coach John Butler may not have always seen eye to eye. Regardless, I'm excited to see what Addae can do with Elam. There is talent there and it'll be up to Addae to see that talent come out on game days.
As I mentioned, Addae is coming over from the Miami Hurricanes, where he has been for the last two seasons as their defensive backs coach. He's had stints with other big-time programs in Georgia and Michigan, as well as time with Cincinnati, Arizona, West Virginia, and Minnesota. Addae has spent 17 years coaching in the collegiate ranks. He's helped develop several defensive backs that would later go on to be drafted to NFL teams. Now he steps into the NFL coaching world with the Buffalo Bills. Addae joins Ronald Curry as outsiders of the Bills organization to now join the coaching staff at One Bills Drive.
