Buffalo Bills decision on DaQuan Jones just became significantly easier
DaQuan Jones might be the single biggest free agent the Buffalo Bills currently have. I recently talked about a few of the interior defensive linemen that will be at the NFL Combine. While I still think the Bills should draft one in this year's NFL Draft, I also believe that re-signing Jones is paramount to the Bills defense's success in 2024. Understand me, I think the defense can still be good if he's not in there but this line is considerably better when he plays.
The Bills' defense was playing at a championship level before Jones' pec injury, which sidelined him for the majority of the regular season. Once he returned, some rust needed to be knocked off, but it wasn't enough in the end. Bringing him back for the 2024 season means another full offseason of recovery and preparation. Jones makes everyone's job on the defense easier, and he is a must to re-sign.
Buffalo has a lot of offseason needs they need to successfully address and re-signing DaQuan Jones is one of those. With the previous salary cap projections being around $242 million, it seemed that it might be difficult to get a deal done. Jones is one, if not the best defensive tackle among the league's free agents, and teams will be willing to pay him, which could have made things difficult. With the cap increasing to about $13 million more than expected, that's massive news for the Bills. Yes, all teams get this increase but just because the cap increases, doesn't mean player's salaries will increase too.
The Bills should now have the money to easily match any offer that Jones might receive from another team. I also would like to believe that Jones would be willing to come back on a team-friendly deal too. Jones has said he would be happy to return and now Brandon Beane has some additional funds to make it happen, without jeopardizing the possibility of re-signing others or other team's free agents. For the record, I think this will help open things up for the team to retain others but more on that in a later article, that you will be able to check out on BuffaLowDown.com very soon.
