While the Buffalo Bills have pivoted themselves as an offensive team under Josh Allen, the defense has been the main focus under Sean McDermott. The versatility that the coaching staff expects has been a major x-factor as to why the Bills’ defense is able to have success. This offseason, the Bills managed to re-sign All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer, re-sign defensive tackle Ed Oliver, and sign both Taylor Rapp who can play safety and linebacker, as well as defensive end Leonard Floyd.

The preseason showed that their weakest position is the middle linebacker spot and it is not even close. This should be a major concern as to what the Bills will do within this role. As far as every other place on the field, they seem to be solidified.

Heading into this season, the defense will be challenged by high-powered offenses that are at the top or on the rise. Teams like the Jets (with the addition of Aaron Rodgers and Dalvin Cook), Dolphins, Chiefs, Chargers, Eagles, and Jaguars will be tough units for the Bills’ defense.

However, with Leslie Frazier out of Buffalo as the former defensive coordinator, the defense should actually thrive because of lack of aggressiveness. There still has not been a true defensive play caller, but all signs point to Sean McDermott calling the plays. It will be interesting to see how the defense adjusts under this new coaching.

Here are three bold predictions for the Buffalo Bills’ defense heading into the regular season.
