Bills win vs. Cardinals proves Stefon Diggs trade was the right move

When the Buffalo Bills made the big move to trade away wide receiver Stefon Diggs, it caused a lot of questions and concerns as to what the Bills would do at wide receiver. They had already lost Gabe Davis in free agency to the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to trading Diggs. Going into the NFL Draft, the Bills were destined to grab a rookie receiver to reshape their receiving core.

However, if one thing is true about this new look offense, it is that there is no true number one option. Since 2020, the Bills had Diggs as Josh Allen’s number one receiver and the duo dominated the league for the past few seasons. At the same time, tension started brewing once Diggs wasn’t getting his targets. It caused drama and it may have affected the team’s playoff run last year and the year prior.

When Joe Brady took over as the interim offensive coordinator last season, the offense became more expandable and guys like Dalton Kincaid and Khalil Shakir started becoming more involved than ever. That philosophy continued in Buffalo’s Week 1 win against the Arizona Cardinals. It was not a one-man show. Allen completed passes to nine different weapons and the run game got going between James Cook and Ray Davis.

While it wasn’t pretty, the Bills secured the 34-28 victory in front of the home crowd. They did it by spreading the ball around and making it a team effort rather than making one player the star of the show.

Trading away Stefon Diggs proved to be the right decision

There is no denying that Diggs can still be an impactful player. However, he was just no longer the threat he once was when he was with the Bills. Teams didn’t need to gameplan for him anymore and Buffalo learned that they can win without his impact. Mix that with the drama that surrounded Diggs for the last year and a half, the Bills weren’t willing to deal with it.

When they traded Diggs away, they acquired a 2025 2nd round pick so they got decent value for him. As Buffalo continues on their season, we will continue to see if the Diggs trade keeps getting better for Buffalo or if it will take a turn for the worst.
