The 2024 NFL Draft is officially underway and there haven't been many too surprises through three picks. The New England Patriots were number three and there was some discussion that they could trade out to acquire more draft picks.

They ultimately decided to stay where they were and selected former University of North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye. However, Maye has serious question marks and Buffalo Bills fans should be thanking the Washington Commanders for how things unfolded.

The Commanders were one pick ahead of the Patriots and selected former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels. He won the Heisman Trophy this past season and over the past few months it has been clear that he has surpassed Maye as the second-best quarterback behind Caleb Williams.

Jayden Daniels looks more NFL ready and should be able to start right away for the Commanders. As for the Patriots, they probably need to be more patient with Maye and will be forced to start Jacoby Brissett, which is all good news for the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo Bills defense will make it tough on Drake Maye

While the Bills lost a lot of experience on the defensive side of the ball this offseason, Sean McDermott is still the head coach and one of the best defensive minds in the league. He does a particularly good job against rookie, inexperienced quarterbacks.

While Maye has all the physical tools to be an excellent quarterback in the NFL, he hasn't been able to show it consistently during college. In fact, he regressed in some sense this past year compared to his performance in 2022.

One area in particular that he seems to struggle with is when he is pressured because he struggles to process the defense as the play develops. This is something that McDermott can utilize to his advantage and with a stout defensive line should be able to pressure Maye.

When considering the lack of wide receivers that Maye has, this is a recipe for success for the Buffalo Bills. This season, the Bills are going to be going for their fifth straight AFC East title and will have to compete with the Jets and Dolphins but don't expect the Patriots to be in that discussion with Drake Maye under center this season.
