Bills fans can't get hopes up over "First Super Bowl" rankings list

There is a difference between being positive and being realistic.

Some NFL fans are optimistic about their favorite teams, while others are more focused on the negative and what needs to be improved. Either way, it sparks a conversation for almost any topic. One topic that comes up before the start of the season is looking at each Super Bowl-less teams and figuring out the chances of them raising the Lombardi trophy for the first time in franchise history. The last team to win their first Super Bowl took place in 2017-18 when the Philadelphia Eagles brought down Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in a thriller.

The Buffalo Bills still remain on the list of having no Super Bowls. They came close to an appearance in the Super Bowl in 2020-21 when they reached the AFC Championship game. Then the following season, if the defense could just contain Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs for 13 seconds, the Bills would have hosted the conference championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Even though the Bills went under a lot of change this offseason, there is still more belief in them to win the Super Bowl than other Super Bowl-less teams.

Brad Gagnon from Bleacher Report released a rankings list in which team has the best chance to win their first Super Bowl in 2024. The Bills were ranked as the first team that has the best chance at winning it all. Gagnon gave the Bills a 10% chance which is the highest percentage on the list, more than teams like the Bengals, Texans, and Lions.

Gagnon mentions how even though Buffalo will look different this season, Josh Allen is still playing at an elite level. With this high praise from Gagnon, this shows us that having a quarterback like Allen plays a huge factor when considering these rankings. Gagnon also mentioned that for the past four postseasons, the Bills have managed to advance atleast one time before being eliminated and that maybe, just maybe, they can put together a playoff run.

However, Bills fans should not get their hopes up...

The Super Bowl window for the Bills looks the smallest it has been pre-2020 season. When you compare the Bills to teams like the Texans and Lions, Buffalo’s roster did not get better while these other two teams did. Buffalo traded their former number one receiver Stefon Diggs to them this past offseason, and the two teams will play against each other in Week 5 in which C.J. Stroud is going to be a massive problem for Buffalo. When it comes to Detroit, they made it all the way to the NFC Championship game last year and had they not blown a huge first half lead, they would have been the ones battling the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Not to mention, their roster did feature any major losses, only gains.

While the Bills have Allen and the playoff experience more than Houston and Detroit, they cannot say that they have more talent as of right now. Come September and October, we can re-evaluate but on paper, the Bills’ Super Bowl win percentage isn’t looking as great.
