If you were to ask Buffalo Bills fans as to what they think about Sean McDermott, half of them would say that he needs to go and the other half would say that he is the right guy for the job, considering what the Bills were before his arrival. As the head coach of the Bills, McDermott has posted a 73-41 record in the regular season (.640) which is the highest since Marv Levy. A downside to McDermott is his coaching in the playoffs which has led the Bills to a 5-6 playoff record under his watch.
Buffalo has made the playoffs every year except in 2018 under McDermott and he has led the Bills to four consecutive division titles the last four seasons. Pretty impressive if you ask. At the same time, there is evidence that we may have seen McDermott’s ceiling as a head coach. He has shown that he can come in, clean up a mess, and build up a roster to compete in December and January. He has not shown that he can overcome big moments in crucial situations, which has ultimately cost the Bills multiple trips to the playoffs.
The only way McDermott is not the head coach in Buffalo beyond 2024 is if the Bills have an absolute meltdown of a season and there are no major injuries on the roster. However, anything is possible…
Colin Cowherd from “The Herd” created a list of the best landing spots for former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and made his case for the Bills to hire Belichick in 2025.
Bills fans need to hope that this does not happen
Maybe McDermott is not the guy for the future of the Bills and does get let go. It is possible without a doubt, but bringing in Belichick to replace him is the worst mistake Buffalo could make. NFL fans saw the downfall of the Patriots once Tom Brady left and Belichick was still there. It is obvious that Brady was the key to success for New England, not Belichick. Now, this is not saying that Belichick can’t coach, because he knows his defense and could be the best ever in the game. At the same time, his head coaching days might be behind him, despite rumors of him wanting to come back to the game a year from now.
Either way, while it would make for a fun matchup against the Patriots, seeing Belichick in Bill blue is not the best idea for Buffalo.
