Most fans don't concern themselves too much with who the punter is or how good he is but there are times when the punter just might be the difference between winning and losing. Imagine you are up by two, can't run out the clock, and are forced to punt. Your punter pins the opposing team inside the five-yard line. He suddenly becomes the hero of the game.
I know this doesn't happen all too often but for a team and fan base that is starving for a Super Bowl, we'll take any and every edge we can get. The current Bills punter, Sam Martin, has been solid for the team, and fortunate for the Bills he was available at this time last year when the Bills were in serious need of a good punter.
Punting stats are hard to come by, particularly in the early days; however, history tells us the Buffalo Bills have had 22 players kick punts at one point. The list is mostly punters; however, we've seen kicker Rian Lindell have one punt in his career. The punt traveled 37 yards and only netted 17. Needless to say, he won't be making an all-time list as a punter.
We've also had one quarterback and a defensive back punt for the Bills. Between 1960 and 1963, Billy Atkins doubled as a punter and defensive back, with 52 career punts. Quarterback, Daryle Lamonica also known as the Mad Bomber, bombed a few punts during his career with the Bills between 1963 and 1966, 52 punts to be exact.
