Tyrel Dobson is showing out
When Tremaine Edmunds signed with the Chicago Bears, fans, myself included, assumed the team would either sign a middle linebacker via free agency, draft one, or both, and yet they did neither. This instantly told you the Buffalo Bills were comfortable rolling with one of the options already on the team.
They did draft Dorian Williams but he was listed more as an outside linebacker and the team tried him at middle linebacker during rookie mini-camp and OTAs. But once training camp started, the middle linebacker battle was a three-horse race between Dobson, Terrel Bernard, and Baylon Spector. The coaching staff elected to keep Willians at the outside backer role, backing up Matt Milano.
After the first week of camp, that race has been reduced down to two, that being Dobson and Bernard. So far, the reports have been Dobson has looked really good in coverage, which is great to hear as this was the one concern with him. His ability to play the run was never the question but can he cover?
He’s been involved in numerous pass breakups and from all accounts seems to be leading in this position battle. He’s by far the most experienced of all the middle linebacker options, as this is his fourth season with the team.
