Buffalo Bills would be unlikely to extend Dawson Knox before 2022 season

If the Bills were to trade for Zach Ertz, it would have had a major impact on Dawson Knox and he probably would not have had the breakout season that he did in 2021.

That season, Knox would end up setting career highs in receptions (71), receiving yards (587) and receiving touchdowns (9). The receiving touchdowns would be tied for the league high among tight ends with Travis Kelce, Mark Andrews, and Hunter Henry.

If the Bills were to trade for Ertz, the coaching staff would have likely utilized him in a starter role and he would have probably seen all the snaps that Knox did during that season. Without the chance to see those additional snaps and be the starter for this offense, Knox probably would not have gotten anything close to the four-year extension he received prior to the season.

The fact that the Bills traded for Ertz would have probably meant that they would prioritize extending him over Knox. It might have ended up being a similar contract that Ertz signed with the Cardinals, which was three years and $31.65 million.
