Begin the year with A.J. Klein as the starter

One of the big responsibilities of the middle linebacker position is knowing the entire defense but also being able to communicate it to the rest of the players on the field. The middle linebacker usually has the green dot, which means he has direct communication with the coaching staff on the sideline and has to communicate the play to the rest of the defense.

If the Buffalo Bills want the experience in this area, then A.J. Klein is going to be their best option to start the year. He is a veteran linebacker that has spent almost seven seasons in Sean McDermott's defense and with McDermott calling plays this season that familiarity could be a big advantage.

However, Klein may struggle after the ball is snapped as he doesn't have the size or athleticism that Tremaine Edmunds brought. That is why Klein may only be an option to start the year and hopefully a player like Bernard or even Dorian Williams gains enough experience that at some point during the season they can take over.

This is definitely not the ideal situation or the one the coaching staff envisioned earlier this offseason but it might give them a little more time to hopefully have one of the younger players develop and be ready to step into a starting role.
