Ty Johnson

The Buffalo Bills signed veteran Ty Johnson just this week, which was a bit of a surprising move because the running back position seemed pretty well set. It remains to be seen exactly what his role might be but in the past, he has primarily been a third down running back and a threat as a pass catcher out of the backfield.

The Buffalo Bills did lose Nyheim Hines before training camp due to a knee injury suffered during a jetski accident, so Johnson could be a replacement for him. However, that means the team would either release Damien Harris or Latavius Murray to create a spot or keep four running backs on the 53-man roster.

Neither option would make much sense and Ty Johnson might serve a similar role to what Duke Johnson did last season. The veteran running back was cut right before the season but re-signed to the practice squad to provide depth at the position.

This could be the same thought process for Johnson and it gives Buffalo a way to get him in early to try and get him up to speed on the offense so if the need were to arise, he could contribute quickly.
