Around the same time the Buffalo Bills signed Darrynton Evans, they also had tight end Jace Sternberger in for a workout and would also sign him to a one-year contract. He is a former third round pick by the Green Bay Packers and didn't make much of an impact.
Sternberger would end up playing in the USFL, and play very well with eight receiving touchdowns which led the entire league. The Bills interest in Sternberger made sense as he fits the type of tight end they have been looking for, in terms of an athletic player who can stretch the field at that position.
Unfortunately, Sternberger's performance in the USFL hasn't really translated to training camp and it didn't get any better in the preseason game against the Colts. He would have one target, which he caught and took for 17 yards, however he would fumble the ball on a hit and turn it over to the Colts.
Jace Sternberger was competing for that third tight end spot with Quinton Morris and at this point Morris looks to be a lock to make the roster.
