3 questions at safety for the Buffalo Bills entering training camp
For essentially the entire tenure as head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Sean McDermott has been able to rely on the duo of Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde. The Bills would sign both as free agents in 2017 and these two have developed into one of the best duos in the NFL over that time.
Prior to last season, the Bills have never really known what this defense looks like over an extended period of time without both on the field. Before the 2022 season, Hyde and Poyer combined had only missed four games over a five-year period.
That all changed last year when Micah Hyde would suffer a neck injury in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans that would cost him the remainder of the year. Meanwhile, Poyer dealt with a wide range of injuries and missed four games.
The depth was tested but it also gave players like Damar Hamlin a chance to show what they are capable of. Unfortunately, Hamlin would suffer one of the scariest injuries in NFL history against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16 and miss the remainder of the year.
Entering training camp, these are three key questions for the safety position for the Buffalo Bills.
