The Buffalo Bills have a history of extending their players right before the season begins. Last year it was Ed Oliver who signed a four-year extension, and this year, the Bills have multiple extension candidates on their roster. In this article, we’ll look at two players who are up for extensions, but there are so many more that you can name too.
Brandon Beane’s mantra has been to draft quality players and extend them early before their price goes up. He did that last year with Oliver, a few years ago with Josh Allen, and not too long ago with Dawson Knox. Most have worked out, giving Beane a good track record when it comes to extensions.
Multiple players, including cornerback Rasul Douglas, are up for extensions, as noted before. However, at 29 years old, and just restructuring his contract a few months back, Douglas is unlikely to see a new contract this year. That leaves enough money in the stand for draft picks who are up for extensions. Who the Bills pay first is up for debate, but based on Beane’s track record, you can almost guarantee an extension is looming between now and Week 1.
The Bills will need to find ways to save money in 2025, and extending some of their players now will help their cap space in future years rather than waiting. With the $10M in cap space from Tre White’s release, the Bills could use some of that money as well to sign one of their young stars. We could potentially see one get done in the middle of preseason action, much like Dion Dawkins’ extension in 2020 (if there were preseason games in 2020).
