Going into the Joe Brady era, the Buffalo Bills could not have been given a tougher opponent right out of the gate. In Week 1 of this upcoming season, the Bills will be taking the field down in Houston to face the Texans. Everyone saw what Houston’s defense did to Josh Allen and the Bills’ offense last season.

They chased him around from start to finish, sacking him 8 times. Even though the Texans barely escaped with a 23-19 win, it truly did feel like Buffalo stood no chance. Buffalo will now head back down to Houston, and that ferocious defense will be coming at Allen once again.

There was so much that went wrong for Buffalo in that game, so how could it be approached this time early on in the season? Well, the Bills will need to figure that out quickly as Ben Solak from ESPN put this Week 1 match as a must-see game across the league.

"What does head coach Joe Brady do that offensive coordinator Joe Brady couldn't to beat this ferocious Texans defense? Are the Texans' investments in their running game finally going to pay off? What new life can Jim Leonhard infuse into a Bills defense that was running Sean McDermott stuff for a decade? Does Stroud look like he did in last year's regular season ... or like he did in the playoffs?" said Solak.

Bills faced with ultimate nightmare scenario early in 2026 season

Even though the Texans have challenges themselves to overcome, they have Buffalo's number when these two teams meet in Houston. C.J. Stroud didn’t even play against Buffalo last season and still the Bills couldn’t get the road win. Again, it’s been all about Houston’s defense and how they are the best in the league.

Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, and newly added Kayden McDonald are going to be a problem for Buffalo. It’s as simple as that.

While the Bills won’t have to worry about the Texans later on in the regular season, getting them as the first matchup creates a tough task for Brady. This game could ultimately become a nightmare for Bills fans if things don’t start out strong, and there is a bit of a repeat from last year’s matchup.
