When the Buffalo Bills decided to fire Sean McDermott two days after their divisional round loss, it sparked so many reactions and emotions from fans, players, pretty much anyone who is involved in the NFL somehow and someway.
During Terry Pegula and Brandon Beane’s disastrous press conference last Wednesday, Beane made it clear that is a “100-percent open search” per Sal Capaccio, as far as their head coaching interview process.
Beane definitely wasn’t lying about that as the Bills had brought in former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers for an interview, per Adam Schefter. It was the biggest shock of the day, and now Rivers is in the mix for the position.
That should be the biggest shock of their head coaching search now after learning from Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk has reported that the Bills “are not interested in Bill Belichick.” This is a very smart move by the Bills.
Bills will reportedly not consider Bill Belichick for their HC vacancy
The Bills have interviewed a good amount of candidates so far, and there could very well be more. Adam Schefter reported that the Bills are interested in talking with Davis Webb from the Broncos, but they will need to wait until Denver’s season is over. So, if the Broncos win today, the Bills can’t talk with Webb until after the Super Bowl, which is just too long to wait.
However, with Florio reporting that the Bills have no interest in Belichick is a bit of a sigh of relief. We all know what Belichick did for nearly two decades to the Bills as the head coach of the Patriots. However, we also know that the main reason why the Bills couldn’t win against New England was because of Tom Brady.
When Brady left New England, Belichick only beat the Bills twice and lost all control of the AFC East to Buffalo. In his first year as the head coach of North Carolina down in college, it did not go well at all. While Belichick might be one of those coaches that are better in the NFL than in college, the Bills are very smart to not even consider him a candidate.
For as great of a defense that Belichick can call, he’s not the best overall coach in recent memory and the Bills need someone who will be best for the entire team, not just one side of the ball.
