After deciding to not make a selection three times yesterday, the Buffalo Bills won’t have to wait long to be on the clock when the second round begins tonight at 7PM. Buffalo came into the draft with just seven picks, kicking it off at No. 26. Instead of taking a player, they traded back three times and basically added two more draft picks for today and tomorrow, and their draft will begin at No. 35.
General manager Brandon Beane had implied earlier this week that there weren’t a ton of true first-round graded players on the board for the Bills and he showed it. Now, the Bills will have the chance to get a player who could have easily been selected in the first round. From picks 21 and on, there were some very questionable picks that teams made. Now, the Bills will have their chance to make other teams pay for their mistakes.
While fans certainly have the right to be annoyed that the Bills didn’t make a selection, Brandon Beane was extremely smart to do what he did because now the Bills can really fill out the roster more than they could going into Round 1.
Bills, Brandon Beane receive high praise for Round 1 directions
After the first round came to a conclusion, NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. listed his winners and losers and Kiper Jr. listed the Bills put the Bills as a winner despite not making a pick. He praised the Bills for racking up more picks and having “good management of the board”.
"Buffalo didn't pick any players Thursday, but it added some picks in three trade-backs. The Bills entered with seven picks and now have nine. In a year without many players with true first-round grades, this is good management of the board for general manager Brandon Beane." said Kiper Jr.
Beane was facing a ton of pressure going into the draft and fans should be pleased with what he was able to do. Two of the picks that were made from the Bills' trades were offensive linemen, so the value is still there for the Bills going into tonight.
This will be the second time in three years where the Bills traded back and out of the first round. They did it back in 2024 and eventually ended up drafting wide receiver Keon Coleman. Now, they will have their chance to take a high-end second round prospect. Should they go defense? Maybe add another receiver? Well don’t worry, we will definitely find out here sooner than later.
