For the first time since 2017, the Buffalo Bills will be drafting without Sean McDermott at the table and it will be interesting to see what direction they go in the first year of the Joe Brady era. Then again, Brandon Beane will still be making the calls but going from a defensive head coach to an offensive one, there could be some surprise selections compared to what has happened in the past.
Last season, the Bills had problems on both sides of the ball and yet they were still one of the best teams in the league. On offense, they have already gone out and traded for D.J. Moore to improve the receiver room. On defense, they have already made a good amount of defensive signings especially in the secondary.
Right now, the Bills are looking better than they did at this point last year. However, they still have a lot of improvement and one area that they could focus on is the run-defense. We all know that Buffalo’s run-defense was terrible last season, giving up over 135 yards on the ground. With that alone, you would think that Buffalo will address that in the NFL Draft next month, and Cody Williams from FanSided as the Bills doing just that.
In Williams' latest mock draft, the Bills select Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald.
"I do love the Ohio State product, even if he hasn't realized himself as a pass-rusher just yet. He can plug and play on early downs right now and help Buffalo in an area of need." said Williams.
He is a true run-stopper and could be what Buffalo needs, but drafting McDonald could cause some controversy on the defensive line for one specific reason.
Bills drafted Kayden McDonald may cause issue on who truly starts in trenches
Let’s not forget, the Bills went heavy on the defense in last year’s draft which included them trading up for DT T.J. Sanders in the second round and DT Deone Walker in the fourth round. Walker was by far the better player as he created an interior pass rush and had some solid stops at the line.
Also, the Bills still have Ed Oliver on the roster…so bringing in someone like McDonald would cause a bunch of conversations amongst fans because with Buffalo going to a 3-4 defense, ideally you will only have a true 1-technique defensive tackle and Walker could very well be that right from the start.
If the Bills were to draft McDonald especially in the first round, there would be a bunch of storylines throughout the summer and going into preseason. The Bills are better off going for linebacker help early on in the draft and continue the development of Walker and Sanders.
