The NFL Draft is just a couple hours away and we are seeing a bunch of last minute mock drafts coming out before the draft opens up at 8PM EST live from Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Buffalo Bills could be waiting for quite some time before they make their pick. As of right now, they will be picking 30th overall so if they decide to stay there, then Bills fans will have to wait until between 11PM and 12AM to find out who will be joining the Bills.
However, the Bills also have the option to trade up if there is a certain prospect that they like that is falling. Teams like the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams could be looking to add more picks for this draft. The Bills have ten picks to use from so Brandon Beane could very well make a trade package to move up.
Pete Prisco from CBS Sports published his latest mock draft heading into Round 1 tonight Prisco has the Bill sticking with the No. 30 pick and landing quite the player late in the first round without having to trade up. In Prisco’s mock draft, the Bills selected Michigan cornerback Will Johnson.
"A long zone corner with great instincts is exactly what the Bills need. They don't play a ton of man, which is why Johnson works in their defense. His 40-yard dash time is worrisome, but he plays fast enough."Pete Prisco, CBS Sports
At one point, Johnson was considered a can’t miss prospect as he was fantastic with the Wolverines. He is a true ballhawk corner who is big and plays fantastic zone coverage (which is what the Bills run on defense). Throughout this process, we have seen Johnson slip down the draft boards due to his combine performance as well as a foot injury he suffered last season.
Will Johnson is too good to pass up on at No. 30
We’ve been saying it for months that the Bills need secondary help. Christian Benford is here to stay for the next five years and the Bills brought back Tre’Davious White on a one-year deal. However, White is not the future of Buffalo anymore. The Bills need to bring in secondary help with a CB2 who can play opposite of Benford for 2025 and beyond.
So what if there are concerns about Johnson, what prospect doesn’t have some? It’s a risk no matter who you take. Even the “safest” picks can become busts at any time. You take the best player available and if Johnson is available at No. 30, why hesitate on him? He is a perfect fit for Buffalo’s defense and he takes care of a major problem that the Bills have had for a little while now.
