After kicking off the offseason with headlines surrounding running back James Cook and his $15 million per year contract demands, Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills did extend one of their offensive playmakers but it wasn’t Cook. Instead, it was Cook’s draft classmate, Khalil Shakir, who signed a four-year deal worth up to $60.2 million over than span.

Shakir has become Josh Allen’s go-to guy for last season and a half and had a career year in 2024. Catching 76% of his targets last season proves that he is reliable and Allen can utilize him as a security blanket in critical moments.

With this extension, Shakir became the first Bills player of the 2022 draft class that received his extension. Brandon Beane has a tough decision to make for other players like James Cook, Terrel Bernard, and Christian Benford. In addition, the Bills also have Greg Rousseau who will be looking for a big payday since this will be his fifth-year.

With the Bills having Shakir locked up for the next five seasons, it provides stability on offense and it should make Josh Allen very happy knowing that he has his go-to slot receiver.

Khalil Shakir's work ethic shows that Bills made fantastic decision to extend him

Shakir officially signed his contract today with the Bills and there was one statement that he made that should have Bills fans jumping for joy. According to Alex Brasky, per Khalil Shakir, the day that the agreement was made, Shakir was working out at 7am in th gym and stated “There’s a lot more to accomplish out there.”

This should show Bills fans the dedication that Shakir has to help Buffalo get over the playoff hump. The training doesn’t stop and now Shakir is here for the long-haul in Buffalo. With having his MVP quarterback throwing him the ball, we can expect Shakir to keep growing within his role for the foreseeable future.

With Shakir getting his deal all done, the focus now turns to which member of Buffalo’s 2022 draft class could receive the next extension. Will James Cook get what he want? Or will someone else find themselves signing on the dotted line? It’s going to be an offseason to watch for Bills fans.
