The Buffalo Bills kicked off the 4th round of the NFL Draft by trading back one spot with the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Bills acquired a 2027 7th-round pick in the process. After the Raiders selected CB Jermod McCoy, the Bills decided to go with offense in drafting offensive lineman Jude Bowry out of Boston College.

While that wasn’t the offensive pick that many fans were expecting the Bills to make, you can never be upset with adding offensive line depth. Or, in this case, a potential starter at some point in the next year or two.

While Buffalo has their penciled-in starters in the trenches, the addition of Bowry who is primarily a tackle but has the ability to also play guard just made Buffalo’s offensive line room more deep. Bills reporter Sal Capaccio reported a mind-blowing stat from Pro Football Focus (PFF) about Bowry that should have fans feeling great about the Bowry addition.

Jude Bowry stat proves Bills were smart to invest in OL early in 4th round

Per Capaccio, according to PFF, Bowry had 321-drop backs at left tackle for the Eagles at Boston College and he allowed just two sacks. That is absolutely ridiculous and the Bills may have acquired themselves a steal in Bowry.

You can look at this pick in different ways. With Bowry being a primary left tackle, he could be an eventual successor to Dion Dawkins. While Dawkins is still playing high level football, he is approaching the backend of his career. Another way to look at it is the Bills could push him inside to the guard spot, either at left or right.

O’Cyrus Torrence is approaching the final year of his rookie contract, and both Alec Anderson and Austin Corbett are each on one-year deals so their long-term future in Buffalo is not guaranteed.

In order to keep Josh Allen upright in his prime, the Bills have to make sure that they have consistent protection for him upfront. Buffalo solidified the middle of the trenches with re-signing Connor McGovern. They have two of the best offensive tackles in the game with Dawkins and Spencer Brown. For now, their guard spots should be good but it could be shuffling after 2026 if not before.

Getting Bowry early in the 4th round gives him a serious chance at potentially becoming a starter early on at guard if he shines in training camp. Or, the Bills could be saving him to plug at tackle in the future. Either way, it’s a smart investment for Buffalo moving forward.
