The Buffalo Bills made a bit of a surprising roster move early on Wednesday as they signed their former All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer per Jordan Schultz. Poyer spent a year away from the Bills with the Miami Dolphins, and is now back up in Western New York after a disappointing 2024 season down in south beach.
Poyer’s first stint with the Bills was back in 2017 when he signed with them and became an All-Pro player next to Micah Hyde, where the duo became the best safety duo in the league. Last season, the Bills had Hyde on the practice squad and now Poyer is also on the practice squad, for now.
Since the Bills were in major salary cap trouble last offseason, they had to depart a lot of veterans that had become part of the culture change that has helped Buffalo become a powerhouse. Players like Tre’Davious White (who came back to Buffalo this offseason), Mitch Morse, Gabe Davis, and they even traded Stefon Diggs away. Poyer was also part of the departures and he ended up down in Miami.
Poyer’s one year stint with the Dolphins was a forgettable one as he did not have his best season, and the Dolphins also fell apart, too. After being signed back to the Bills, Poyer spoke with the media and he explained that his one season with the Dolphins should have “an asterisk next to it” and that even though he was in Miami, he “was paying attention to everything going on here [Buffalo]” per Alex Brasky.
Jordan Poyer on his time with the Dolphins: "Put an asterisk by it.. it was a hard year... Even being in Miami last year, I was paying attention to everything that was going on here." #Bills #BillsMafia

Jordan Poyer gets brutally honest about his time in Miami
The Dolphins have become a team that has ultimately become laughable and there is not a lot of expectation of them being good this season. Miami finished 8-9 last season and lost a lot of players this past offseason. Their secondary is setting themselves up to be one of the worst in the league and unless the offense can keep them in games, they shouldn’t be a powerhouse whatsoever.
From the Bills’ perspective of all of this, hearing these comments from Poyer about how he was paying attention to everything on with Buffalo shows how much of an impact the Bills have had on Poyer and his career.
Since signing with the Bills back in 2017, Poyer has become a fan-favorite with Bills Mafia and he was one of the best safeties in the league. Coming back to Buffalo for this season, the “Farewell Season” with it being the last year in the original Highmark Stadium, Poyer is joining the Bills for potentially one last ride but in a capacity where he can be more of a mentor to help the young guys develop.
