Despite having a defensive-minded head coach with Sean McDermott, the Buffalo Bills are still very inconsistent on defense. Not to mention, they are the reason why the Bills have failed to make it to the Super Bowl. Going into this season, the hope is that with all of the changes that the front office made this offseason, Buffalo’s defense can become a strength rather than a liability.

With additions upfront and in the secondary, the Bills will be able to still use a heavy rotation to make sure guys are rested and fresh when they hit the field. If everything goes as planned and they can avoid injuries, the Bills’ defense should be a heck of a unit to watch.

4 bold predictions for Bills defense in 2025

Joey Bosa records 10+ sacks for first time since 2021

Buffalo’s biggest free agent acquisition was edge rusher Joey Bosa, who joined the Bills after spending nearly a decade with the Chargers. Since entering the league in 2016, no one can say that Bosa is a one-man wrecking crew on defense. However, when you mention Bosa, you have to also talk about how his lack of availability has played a role in his career due to injuries. While he managed to play in 14 games last season, from 2022-2023 he only played in 14 total games.

His last great season was in 2021 where he played in 16 games and recorded 10.5 sacks along with 51 total tackles. In LA, he was utilized a lot and wasn’t part of a rotation so there was extra tread added on to his game. Coming into a scheme that Buffalo has where he doesn’t need to play every down, he has a great shot at staying healthy and getting back to his old form.

On a one-year deal, Bosa has a lot to prove to the NFL and if he becomes the difference maker for Buffalo, it’s going to be a great investment by the Bills.

Terrel Bernard earns First-Team All-Pro honors

I have absolutely no idea how Terrel Bernard hasn’t become an All-Pro by now. Maybe it is a popularity contest rather than actually looking at production because over the last two seasons, Bernard has recorded 247 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 5 interceptions. While his production declined just a tad due to injury, Bernard has established himself as the quarterback of the defense and taken command of the unit.

He now has his extension and he’s ready to go for the Bills for the long-term. It’s time that he gets his recognition and becomes an All-Pro.

Bills defense only allows 25+ points in one game in 2025

Now this might be my most controversial take yet, but with the overhaul of Buffalo’s defense, it’s a fantastic prediction to put out there. In the NFL, if you can limit your opponent’s chances to score, you will set yourself up for a win. We already know that the Bills have a high-powered offense and have no issues lighting up the scoreboard. It’s just the other side of the ball that has some concerns.

However, maybe the new additions can provide a great impact and help boost Buffalo’s defensive rankings in the league. I will say though, with some of the opponents like the Ravens, Bengals, Eagles, Chiefs, and Buccaneers, this prediction might go down the drain sooner than later.

Buffalo’s defense finally steps up big-time in playoffs

I mean, this is the only thing that’s keeping the Bills from reaching the Super Bowl. Under McDermott, Buffalo’s defense has fallen apart in the playoffs since 2020 where they have given up no less than 27 points in a loss. We can only give McDermott so many passes before we start to have a hard conversation on whether or not he is the coach that can put the Bills into the big game.

However, we have to “Billieve” and that’s exactly what I’m doing. With the changes this offseason, there is no reason why this unit shouldn’t step up in the playoffs and take the pressure off of Josh Allen and the offense.
