The Buffalo Bills released their coaching staff not too long ago, and the biggest thing that had jumped out was the hiring of John Fox who will serve as a Senior Assistant coach. He is a former head coach that will serve as a “sounding board” for Joe Brady. He has plenty of head coaching experience and he’s competed in two Super Bowls. His hire might be the most beneficial.

Now, the Bills are reportedly adding another coach to their staff and it’s a name that football fans might be very familiar with. According to Daniel Gallen, the Bills are hiring former college and NFL quarterback Trace McSorley, who was recently with Penn State. The Bills have been hiring from the college level and McSorley is now the most recent.

Bills hiring Trace McSorley came from out of nowhere

McSorley leaves the college that he was at as a player to join the Bills, and will now have the chance to show what he can do at the top level. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2019, being with them for three seasons. He then joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2021 but was only with them for two seasons.

He was a member of the Patriots, Bears, Steelers, and Commanders at one point or another, but was only a practice squad player at most. McSorley then went to Penn State to join the coaching staff, but is now leaving for the NFL.

More than likely, McSorley should be working with the quarterbacks and him getting the opportunity to work with Josh Allen could very well set him up for a solid coaching career in the NFL. With being an offensive assistant, he should be working closely with Brady, Pete Carmichael, and QBs coach Bo Hardegree.

McSorley is one of the few coaches that the Bills have hired from the college level, including Bobby April III (outside linebackers coach), Terrance Jamison (defensive line), and Jay Valai (cornerbacks). College coaches are now getting their chance to prove what they can do at the pro level.

With the Bills now having Brady in charge, things are already looking different. It’s new minds and new visions, so it will be interesting how the first year away from the Sean McDermott era will look.

Up next is free agency and the NFL Draft that will really show how this team will look when they take the field in the 2026 season.
