After months of waiting since January, the Buffalo Bills will be playing their first game of the 2026 season which is a big moment for many reasons. However, the biggest thing that fans are most interested in seeing is how new head coach Joe Brady will perform in his official head coaching debut.
Brady has been in the building since 2022 where he started out as the quarterbacks coach, then was promoted to interim offensive coordinator in the middle of the 2023 season, and then became the full-time coordinator in 2024. He's had his head coaching interviews, but with the Bills moving on from Sean McDermott, Brady interviewed with the Bills and ultimately was their guy.

In last year's matchup, Brady saw how bad his offense was beaten by this Texans defense, especially from someone like Will Anderson Jr., who will once again look to chase down Josh Allen.
Even though Brady's debut won't be an easy one at all, this is also a big time opportunity for him to make his mark and impress Bills Mafia. According to the Buffalo Bills' PR X account, not only could the Bills get their first win against the Texans in Houston for the first time since 2006, but Brady will have the chance to become the 4th head coach in franchise history to win their debut.
The last time the Bills won in Houston, it was a 24-21 win in which J.P. Losman threw for 340 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Expectations are high for Joe Brady entering new Bills era
Ever since Brady was chosen to be Sean McDermott’s replacement, there has always been some kind of mixed emotion on the setup. Sure, the Bills made a change, but they just promoted within. However, Brady is on the offensive side of things while McDermott was about the defense.
In addition, Brady also hired a defensive coordinator in Jim Leonhard, who is primed to become a head coach in the near future if things go well with him in Buffalo. He is in charge of a defensive unit that has let the Bills down in crucial moments over the years.
Even though change is a sign of either a step back or even a rebuild, the Bills are closer to a championship contender. Brady is in a better position as a first-time head coach than McDermott was back in 2017. The pressure for Brady begins today down in Houston, and it will be interesting to see how he performs.
