Jets firing Joe Douglas officially puts Bills as AFC East leaders for years to come

The New York Jets are an absolute mess. Ever since Week 1 of last season, they have been hit with horrendous bad luck with Aaron Rodgers tearing his achilles and then this year, they have been arguably the biggest disappointment in the league. After just five games, the Jets decided to surprisingly fire head coach Robert Saleh after a 2-3 start, just one game behind the Bills for the AFC East.

They are 1-5 since getting rid of Saleh and now they have fired their general manager, Joe Douglas. New York hired Douglas in 2019 and he helped put together a solid Jets team over the years. He also brought in Saleh in 2021, and together, the duo decided to draft quarterback Zach Wilson which started their downfall of their tenure with the Jets.

After missing on Wilson, Douglas traded for Aaron Rodgers prior to the 2023 season, hoping he would be able to elevate the offense and not waste away a championship-tier defense. Quite frankly, that is exactly what happened and now Douglas has paid the price by getting the pink slip.

Joe Douglas being fired just put Bills even more miles ahead of Jets for future

On paper, the Jets have the roster to beat the Bills but nothing has clicked right for them. Not they have fired a regime with both Douglas and Saleh and are stuck with a declining quarterback in Rodgers with no bright future at the position.

It’s a matter of time before the Jets start to lose key players that have been apart of their dominant defense and then players like Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson are going to want to get paid the big bucks. New York has a better chance at competing for the number one overall draft pick rather than a Super Bowl.

With the disorganization of the Jets and them basically starting from square one next year, this puts the Bills further ahead in the division. The Miami Dolphins have been beaten by the Bills year in and year out and can’t seem to get over the hump to taking away the AFC East from Buffalo. As far as New England, they may have a bright future with Drake Maye but the rest of the roster needs a lot of work.

Unless the Jets can somehow magically turn around their organization sooner than later with their new regime that they have to hire, the Bills can expect to be crowned division champs for the foreseeable future.
