Jets expert shares key insights for Monday Night Football battle vs. Bills
By Brandon Ray
Week 6 of the NFL season will come to a conclusion at the end of Monday Night Football between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. Hopefully it will be a better outing than Sunday Night Football where it was a snoozefest between the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants. Both the Bills and Jets are in a desperate need for a win after what has happened to them the last few weeks.
The last time these two teams met on a Monday night in Metlife Stadium, Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn achilles four plays into the season and Zach Wilson led the Jets to an overtime victory over the Bills. Sean McDermott is looking to flip that script for the Bills.
Heading into this division showdown, we had the chance to catch up with Jets Site Expert Justin Fried, who oversees The Jet Press. Fried was able to give some insights about the Jets heading into tonight’s game.
Bills vs. Jets insights for Week 6
1.) The big news around the Jets this week was the firing of Robert Saleh. How much pressure is there on new interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich heading into Monday night?
There's always pressure when a head coach is trying to make a positive first impression, and that's especially true when they're coaching a team that's expected to compete now. Ulbrich takes over a Jets team that still has Super Bowl aspirations despite losing their last two games. With first place in the AFC East on the line, Ulbrich has an opportunity to start his tenure with a signature win or send the Jets further down the division standings.
2.) Who is the Jets’ x-factor player on defense that Bills fans should be worried about?
The Jets' defense continues to play at an elite level despite the team's losses along the defensive line. While that's largely due to their league-best cornerback and linebacker rooms, second-year pass rusher Will McDonald is a large reason for that as well. McDonald is third in the NFL with six sacks and has been the Jets' only source of pass rush in recent weeks. The Jets need him to have a big game in Week 6.
3.) What weaknesses do the Jets have that the Bills could expose?
It's easy to point to the Jets' offensive struggles — of which there are many — but let's focus on the team's run defense instead. It's bad. The Jets enter Monday night's game with PFF's second-worst team run defense, which makes the team's overall defensive success even more successful. A banged-up James Cook and the Bills should be able to find success running the ball against this Jets front seven.
4.) What must the Jets offense do in order to get past a Buffalo defense that plays great situational football?
The Jets' offense has its work cut out for them against a stingy Bills defense in Week 6. The Jets have handed the reins over to passing game coordinator Todd Downing, who will be calling his first game on Monday night. Downing needs to call a more balanced gameplan, one that doesn't see Aaron Rodgers throw the ball 50+ times. More pre-snap motion and play action would be ideal as the Jets attempt to establish a new offensive identity under Downing.
