With head coach Joe Brady earning his first career win as the leader of the Buffalo Bills, he now has very little time to get his team focused on Thursday night's home opener vs. Dan Campbell's Detroit Lions. It will give Bills Mafia their first look at the new stadium with the team playing in a real game situation.
The Lions are a talented team with many skilled players who can wreak havoc on your squad's lineup if your players aren't prepared and ready to go. They, too, have little time to prepare for this matchup, but they still have marquee players the Bills must watch closely if they want to give Brady his second win.
Let's take a look at the five players the Bills need to be ready for in Thursday night's showdown.
5 key players Bills must stop in home opener
1.) RB Jahmyr Gibbs
Since being drafted in 2023, Jahmyr Gibbs has been a game-changing running back who runs at a fast pace and takes it to the house for six. He also excels at catching the ball while running into traffic, like he's disguising himself as a slot receiver.
His power running abilities are underrated despite only being 5-foot-9, 202 pounds. Gibbs is the modern-day version of Barry Sanders, as he can make you miss in space, but he needs to improve at running north and south between the tackles.
The Bills' defensive line, featuring Deone Walker and DeWayne Carter, will have to clog the middle and force Gibbs to run right at them rather than wide, where he is explosive with his speed and cutback moves.
2.) WR Jameson Williams
At 6-foot-1, 184 pounds, Jameson Williams is a tall, fast deep threat who lines up opposite Amon St. Brown on game day. He is your prototypical No. 2 wideout with blazing speed to take the top off a defense and the hands to win contested catches.
The Bills' secondary will need to stay fundamentally sound and prevent quarterback Jared Goff from lobbing the ball over the middle to Williams, even if St. Brown is on the other side of Williams.
3.) TE Sam LaPorta
Sam LaPorta is back in the Motor City and is ready to rev up his engine again and regain his status as one of the premier tight ends in football. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound athlete is a giant receiver on the field capable of outperforming both Williams and St. Brown when healthy.
The tight end position in the NFL is more mainstream than ever, and LaPorta is next in line among the legendary pass-catchers. If he stays healthy all season, look for him to earn a long-term extension similar to the deal Tucker Kraft just signed with the Green Bay Packers.
The Bills' linebackers and secondary must find a way to play him tight with man coverage to prevent him from making those intermediate catches that could go for six.
4.) WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
The name and the production speak louder than his natural abilities as a receiver. Amon-Ra St. Brown has been a dynamite No. 1 wide receiver for the Detroit Lions since being drafted in 2021.
St. Brown's discipline and love for football started back in his childhood home with his parents. They taught him to stay grounded and humble while shaping him into the best football player and person he is today.
At 6-foot, 202 pounds, Brown is a physical wide receiver who can use his frame to make contested catches in the backfield. He's also a tough route runner who can run any route in the book and catch the ball in the corners.
The Bills' secondary must keep playing man coverage on him all day and not be afraid to let him beat them, as long as they don't get too handsy, which would draw 15-yard penalties all day for the Lions' offense. This is also something the Lions' corners keep working on since they play heavy doses of man coverage too.
5.) EDGE Aidan Hutchinson
Since he was drafted No. 2 overall by the Lions in 2022, Aidan Hutchinson has a motor that defines the city of Detroit. At 6-foot-7, 268 pounds, Hutchinson is a bull-dozing edge rusher with tremendous athleticism and power to lay the hit on opposing quarterbacks.
The Bills' offensive line will be tested as they try to neutralize the big edge rusher by running the ball with James Cook, having Josh Allen throw quick screens, or having the explosive QB run Hutchinson over with his athletic abilities.
The Bills passed their first test last week as the offensive line largely contained Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter against the Texans. Let's see how they play out this week against the Lions.
