The Buffalo Bills are now the sole owners of the No. 1 seed in the AFC after a Week 8 win over the Baltimore Ravens. This is looking like their clearest path yet to get to the Super Bowl.
However, there's still a lot of work to be done. The season is merely halfway over. The trade deadline is closing in, and contending teams like the Chicago Bears, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers have already made big trades.
The Bills have been suspiciously quiet thus far, but there's still time to swing a trade. They are more likely to be buyers at the deadline, but there is one player they could sell.
ESPN lists Keon Coleman as trade candidate
Good teams don't typically trade away key players, but it's fair to question how important wide receiver Keon Coleman is to the offense. To say the former second-round pick has been a disappointment for the Bills would be an understatement.
He has 20 catches for 287 yards this season, so he does have a role, but the team would likely be just fine without him. ESPN's Dan Graziano doesn't sound confident that the Bills will trade him, but he's not ruling it out. He listed Coleman as a player who could be on the move at the deadline.
"Coleman has played well enough to stay in Buffalo's short-term and maybe long-term plans," Graziano wrote. "But I'm not sure this team will trade anyone. So consider this pure speculation that Coleman could be attractive enough to a receiver-needy team to bring back the defensive help Buffalo seeks." Graziano wrote.
If the Bills can salvage an asset for Coleman, they likely will. He's not a terrible player, but he hasn't been a great fit in the offense. Plus, he's caused some headaches for the coaching staff in the past. However, it's hard to ignore how he has stepped up in DJ Moore's absence. At the same time, it's a very small sample size and he's only been productive when guys have gone down with injuries.
If they don't want to trade him outright for a draft pick, he could be used in a package to add another player. Either way, it's on the board that Coleman's time in Buffalo is nearing its end in the near future because he hasn't shown that he deserves a long-term deal.
