By this Sunday, teams across the NFL will have to solidify their final 53-man rosters heading into the regular season. The Buffalo Bills are going to have some tough roster decisions to make because there has been a lot of great competition for both starting spots, and just regular roster spots in general.
This is one of the toughest parts of the entire process because no matter what a player could do to impress the front office and coaching staff, it still may not be enough. It's just part of the business. At the same time, there are also players who have not done enough either to secure a roster spot, whether they are on the Bills or somewhere else.
Former Bills first-rounder could be finding another team ahead of 2026
One player that was on the Bills as a former first-round selection is cornerback Kaiir Elam, who ended up being a bust for Buffalo to where he didn't finish out his rookie contract with the team. He played in Buffalo for just three years before being traded to the Dallas Cowboys last offseason, and then he finished the season with the Tennessee Titans.
Elam signed with the Kansas City Chiefs this past offseason, and all that Bills Mafia could do is love the move that Kansas City made in signing him because they know what the Chiefs were in for.
Despite signing with the Chiefs, who desperately needed cornerback depth, Matt Conner from Arrowhead Addict here at FanSided, covering the Chiefs, recently wrote about how Elam may not make it onto the Chiefs' final 53-man roster.
"The spring bluster about Kaiir Elam's addition to the roster stands in stark contrast to the summer silence related to his preseason performance. The former Bills first-round corner has yet to make his presence felt this offseason, whether in minicamp or training camp or the first two preseason games, and it's hard to imagine the Chiefs decide to keep Elam around on the active roster when so many other new faces have earned their keep." said Conner
Kaiir Elam's NFL journey could continue in wrong direction
Elam was drafted by the Bills in the first round back in 2022, but he was outshined by his fellow draft classmate in Christian Benford, who has since become Buffalo’s No. 1 corner of the defense. There were times when Elam was a healthy scratch from games, and when he was on the field, it was underwhelming.
The Bills ended up trading Elam to the Dallas Cowboys and gained some Day 3 draft picks in return which was the best thing to do for both sides. However, Elam didn't even finish the season with the Cowboys as he was waived, and then finshed the season in Nashville.
Now with him being projected to not make the final roster in Kansas City, it clearly shows that the Bills made the right choice to move on from Elam when they did.
