It’s always a great week when the Buffalo Bills get a win, whether it was a blowout or a nail-biting victory. Through their first two games, the Bills’ offense had been the main reason why Buffalo was not just scoring 35+ points, but also looking nearly unstoppable. As for the defense, they were going through their growing pains but managed to make the plays in critical moments.
Then in Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, the offense struggled with five turnovers. However, Buffalo’s defense managed to save them and they showed that they can step up when needed.
Bills' defense came up big for Buffalo in close Week 3 win
When a team usually gives the ball away five times, you would think that they would end up losing the game. Buffalo's defense played a role in not allowing that to happen, as they only allowed the Chargers to score 10 points off of those turnovers. It feels unreal seeing that, but it's the truth.
Typically, Bills fans are used to seeing Josh Allen being the main reason why the Bills win a game. That wasn't the case in Week 3; it was his defense that was the difference maker between a win and a loss.
Defense clicked when the offense couldn't (and that's a great sign)
Defensive tackle Ed Oliver spoke after Buffalo's win and talked about how Allen had to carry the Bills against the Texans and the Lions. Then every now and then, Buffalo's defense will have to step up. "At some point, maybe we both start clicking at the same time. Then we'll have something to talk about." said Oliver, per Nick Sabato of Niagara Gazette.

Imagine a game that the Bills show up to, and both sides of the ball are playing their best...that is an unstoppable Bills team. Before Josh Allen was drafted, the Bills were known having some of the better defensive units in the league. Once Allen came into the league, Buffalo has been known for their high-powered offense but the defense had been inconsistent.
Quite frankly, it was rare to see the defense carry the Bills to a win. It wasn't unheard of, but it was rare. Now granted, due to the greatness of Josh Allen and what he can do, it's hard to overlook at that. However, at the same time, there have been plenty of games where Allen struggled and yet the defense failed to step up and the Bills ended up losing.
Through three games, we have seen Allen and the offense carry the Bills twice and the defense step up big time once. Going into Week 4 against the New England Patriots, a perfect setup would be to beat the Patriots where both sides of the ball for Buffalo come out flying and thrive for all four quarters.
