The Buffalo Bills haven’t lost in Week 1 the last two seasons when they beat the Arizona Cardinals in 2024, and then the Baltimore Ravens in 2025 on Sunday Night Football. Their last season-opening loss was in 2023 on a Monday night to the New York Jets when Aaron Rodgers only played four snaps before rupturing his achilles.
When Buffalo’s schedule officially dropped last Thursday, fans saw the immediate Week 1 matchup against the Texans down in Houston. That is a frightening start for the Bills.
Not only do the Texans have the best defense in the league, but they have had their Bills’ number for quite some time when they face each other in Houston. Just last season, the Bills and Texans faced each other on Thursday Night Football in Houston where Josh Allen was getting chased all over the place.
He was hit 12 times and taken down 8 times, with both Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter having atleast two sacks each. Buffalo’s offensive line stood no chance and even though the Bills somehow almost made a comeback, they really did not stand a chance against this defense. Now, the Bills will go back to Houston to face that same defense that got even better in the trenches with the addition of Kayden McDonald out of Ohio State.
Joe Brady era in Buffalo predicted to get off to rough start in 2026
Yes, it’s only May but there are score predictions being thrown out there and it’s going to continue to happen until the opening night kickoff. Lou Scataglia from NFL Spin Zone put together an early Week 1 predictions for all of the set matchups and Scataglia is predicting a tough start to the Joe Brady era in Buffalo.
Scataglia has the Bills losing to the Texans, 20-17, which would signal a tough offensive outing for the rookie head coach.
"Houston and Buffalo did meet in Houston in 2025, with the Texans winning that low-scoring game by four points. A similar result could happen here. The Texans have the more talented team on paper, and obviously have the home-field advantage. The Bills also have a new head coach in Joe Brady, so the first-game jitters could get to him in a very tough environment and against a very formidable defense." said Scataglia.
The Bills haven’t won a game in Houston against the Texans since 2006, when the Bills won 24-21. It’s the one place that for some reason, Buffalo has always had tough luck. The thing about it is that there has only been one game where Buffalo lost by more than one score. That tells you that the games are close, but the Bills can never close it out.
The story of the Texans is their defense and how ferocious they are. While their offense can do some damage, C.J. Stroud has not been the same player he was back in his rookie season. If Buffalo is able to overcome those huge obstacles against Houston’s defense, they might be able to shock the NFL by leaving Houston with a win.
