The Buffalo Bills have had to face consistent pressure in the Josh Allen era ever since they solidified themselves as true championship contenders. There hasn’t been a season since 2020 where Buffalo wasn’t in true contention for the Super Bowl, they just have yet to make it to the big game.
Despite the tough competion that they will face this season, the Bills will also be a tough opponent for other teams. Even with the changes that happened this past offseason, the expectations are still high for the Bills.
Part of the changes that they went through included revamping the defense by not just bringing in a new defensive coordinator in Jim Leonhard, but also acquiring a bunch of help through free agency and the draft. One player that signed with the Bills was safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who should easily be a Day 1 starter next to Cole Bishop on the backend of the defense.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson brings intensity that Bills defense desperately needs
For many years, it felt like Buffalo's defense was playing to not lose rather than to dominate. They operated in a zone-heavy defense so while they rarely gave up the big play over the top, they did allow offenses to move the ball into field goal range.
With a new 3-4 defense, fans are hoping to see the outlook change for the better, and Gardner-Johnson will be part of that process. Everyone knows that Gardner-Johnson is not afraid to talk, and he is what the Bills need. Someone who can bring intensity and motivate others around him. He's also someone that is not afraid to saying something bold, which includes what he said about the Bills' defensive line heading into this season.
Bills' DL facing high expectations after Gardner-Johnson's latest comments
Gardner-Johnson spoke with the media on Wednesday and in a video that was posted by Matthew Bove of 7 News WKBW, Gardner-Johnson said that this year's Bills defensive line "reminds him of the Eagles defensive line the year they won the Super Bowl" per Bove.
"I don't want to put no bulletin board material up there, but they're like the line that I played with in the Super Bowl" said Gardner-Johnson.
“We got name guys that can actually make plays so that we’re not just depending on one person.” Gardner-Johnson added.

The defensive line for the Bills consist of Ed Oliver, Deone Walker, T.J. Sanders, Bradley Chubb, T.J. Parker, Mike Danna, and many more. The unit that Gardner-Johnson played with when he was in Philadelphia included Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams and Nolan Smith Jr. That Eagles line went on to completely embarrass Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
That defensive line helped the Eagles bring Mahomes down six times, helped the defense grab two interceptions, and allow just 49 total rushing yards.
Gardner-Johnson giving this kind of compliment to Buffalo's defensive line ultimately puts major pressure on them going into this season. We saw a glimpse of what they could be in their first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, but that was just a small sample. We will find out very soon if they are for real or not.
