It's finally here, the moment we've all been waiting for; Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, featuring the Buffalo Bills against the Houston Texans. As things finally get underway, the Bills season enters one of the toughest opening stretches in recent memory. It kicks off against a #1 defense that seems to have only improved this offseason. Truly, the test of Joe Brady's new offense won't be made to wait.
Prediction #1 - Josh Allen learns his lesson
When Buffalo Bills fans think of the Houston Texans, they immediately recall last season's mismatch. An exhilarating debacle, plagued by the Bills own errors and a dominant performance from a truly remarkable Texans defense. On the day, Josh Allen was swarmed and slaughtered, with no scores, 2 interceptions, and a whopping 8 sacks for 70 yards.
It was perhaps less of a failed effort from Josh Allen, and more of a masterclass from Houston. This season, however, expect the Buffalo Bills offense to have a different approach.
Even ignoring philosophical changes to the offense, there is still plenty to find different about these 2026 Bills. D.J. Moore opens up the field with his presence, Skyler Bell expands their depth and versatility, and Alec Anderson offers some subtle changes to the run and pass game. It will be Josh Allen, however, who is the most different in Week 1, getting the ball out quickly and avoiding the pressure.
Prediction #2 - Texans test Bills' new-look defence
Trial-by-fire is hardly a recommended method, but the schedule left the Buffalo Bills with very little choice. From Week 1 to Week 5, Jim Leonhard's unit faces a gauntlet of high-scoring offenses.
The 2025 Bills held an injured Texans offense to 23 points, quarterbacked by Davis Mills. Now, C.J. Stroud has returned, with his nearly-full WR core. With only Tank Dell set to miss the opener, it will be a far tougher task than it was in 2025.
On both sides of the ball, this will be nothing like it was a year ago.
Prediction #3 - Final score
If this game is different in nearly any way from last season's faceoff, it will be a benefit to the Buffalo Bills. From lessons learned to lessons we've yet to learn, there's little separating these two teams yet. Roster and staffing changes indicate the Texans are beholden to a defensively-minded philosophy, but the 2026 Buffalo Bills seems to be anything but that.
There is one factor deciding the difference; Josh Allen's ability to adapt. Houston simply won't get to him the same way again.
