S Justin Reid
Justin Reid would be an underrated move for the Bills if they decided to pursue him. He’s a rangy safety who likes to get after it in the run game and blitzes well. Those are all attributes Sean McDermott likes. The safety position was at times, a weak point for the Bills this season. Taylor Rapp has had trouble staying on the field and Damar Hamlin could be leaving in free agency. Rookie Cole Bishop has flashed, but it’s clear he needs time to develop.
Reid would bring the best safety play the Bills have had since the prime versions of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. Over his last three seasons in Kansas City, he’s racked up 205 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, four sacks, and three interceptions. The contract might be too steep for Buffalo, as he’s projected to earn a three-year $51 million contract with a $17.1 million average. However, Reid would transform the back end of the Bills’ secondary A bonus of acquiring him is taking away one of the biggest chess pieces for the Chiefs defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnola.
DT Milton Williams
While Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter get all the love at defensive tackle for the Eagles, Milton Williams is a guy. He’s missed just one game since the Eagles drafted him four years ago ago is a really nice rotational piece who seems ready for an expanded role. In four seasons he’s totaled 11.5 sacks, 132 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, and 29 quarterback hits.
The Bills need help on the interior of their defensive line after they struggled this season. Much like off the edge, they need to find a way to generate consistent pressure from the interior as well and Williams can help that. He just racked up two sacks and a strip-sack in the Super Bowl against a stout Chiefs interior offensive line. Ed Oliver and Williams would form a nice pass-rushing duo from the interior. At just 25 years old, Williams is projected to fetch a three-year $36 million deal with a $12 million average.
Another steep level contract, but it would go a long way in the Bills overhauling their defensive line. However, would you rather allocate money to the edge for someone like Sweat and draft a defensive tackle in a deep draft class, or spend on a defensive tackle and add to the edge in the draft?
