It feels like that the Buffalo Bills have been trying to solve their pass-rush situation for quite sometime and they have tried to figure out with various veteran edge rushers. In 2022, they made a massive splash by signing Von Miller to a six-year deal after Miller had just won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams.
In last year’s offseason, the Bills released Miller and then signed Joey Bosa to a one-year deal from the Los Angeles Chargers. Bosa led the league with 5 forced fumbles, but his pass-rush presence disappeared down the stretch.
Now the Bills have Bradley Chubb in the building, who comes from the Miami Dolphins and signed a three-year to come to Buffalo. With the change to a 3-4 defensive scheme, Chubb is a perfect match for Jim Leonhard’s vision.
For as productive as Chubb has been in the NFL, part of his story is dealing with injuries that has kept him off the field. The Bills are taking on that risk, especially considering that Chubb tore his ACL late in 2023 and missed the 2024 season. He does have 19.5 sacks between his 2023 and 2025 seasons, but the injuries are certainly concerning for Bills fans.
Bradley Chubb could play massive role in Bills success (or failures)
Gary Davenport from Bleacher Report recently listed the best and worst case scenarios for each defense going into the 2026 season, and the presence of Bradley Chubb plays a factor in both scenarios for the Bills.
"The best-case scenario for the Bills in 2026 defensively is simple: Keep up their stellar pass defense (tops in the NFL a year ago) while improving their run defense, which was the fifth-worst in the league in 2025. They also tallied a mediocre 36 sacks last year, and the team's biggest free-agent addition on defense was brought in to address that need. If Bradley Chubb plays like it's 2023 and the defense stays healthy, it'll be a good one." said Davenport.
"The Bills had injury issues a year ago defensively, especially in the front-seven. If those continue trouble could be brewing, especially if Chubb (who missed the entire 2024 season with an ACL tear) joins them." Davenport added.
So, it’s quite simple; Chubb has the chance to elevate this defense. While the pass-defense has been solid, the pass-rush itself has been inconsistent. Plus, we know how horrendous the run-defense as been as well, which Chubb should help out with.
However, if the injury bug hits the Bills again and they struggle because of it (including Chubb), then the same problems could very well continue for the Bills.
