When the NFL schedule was released, the Buffalo Bills saw how tough the beginning of their schedule was. In the first three weeks, they were set to go down to Houston to take on the Texans, turn around four days later to play the Lions in their home opener of the new Highmark Stadium, and then host the Los Angeles Chargers that picked up Mike McDaniel as their offensive coordinator for Justin Herbert.
However, the Bills have proved any doubters they had wrong through the first two games at an impressive rate. They beat Houston after putting up 36 points, and then managed to score 41 points against the Lions on a short week in their new stadium.
Now, they will host a Chargers team that has looked extremely awful against the Cardinals and Raiders the last two weeks. The biggest takeaway about the Chargers going into this game is that their offense is a mess under McDaniel, and Herbert has been one of the biggest problems.
Justin Herbert off to a rocky started heading into Week 3 matchup against Bills
While Josh Allen has been playing like the league’s MVP, Herbert comes into this game looking lost. He ranks 23rd in passing yards (401) and he has a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 2:3. His QBR currently sits at a 29.2 which is just unbelievable when we have see what he can do in this league. You would think that with getting McDaniel as the play caller, Herbert would take his game to a whole new level.
Instead, it's been the complete opposite and now the Chargers will have to travel cross country to take on a Bills team that is absolutely thriving. While Buffalo's defense still has things to clean up, they showed improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 by holding the Lions' offense to ten points in the first half. Now, the Bills get the chance to make Herbert's life miserable, which is what ESPN's Seth Walder is projecting.
Bills defense projected to have some big time fun against Justin Herbert in Week 3
Walder is projecting Herbert to throw multiple interceptions, which would be a great confidence boost for the Bills defense as they haven't recorded an interception yet this season.
"Herbert will record multiple interceptions. I'd have been pretty surprised two weeks ago if you told me Herbert would lead my model's Week 3 forecast for players more likely to throw two or more interceptions, but that's exactly the case. Because of how poorly the Chargers have played and the fact that they are solid underdogs to Buffalo (and therefore will likely have to pass frequently), Herbert has a 24% chance to throw at least two picks, according to the model." said Walder.
It would be nice to not see the Bills’ defense give up 30+ points for a third consecutive week, especially against this messy Chargers offense. Hopefully Jim Leonhard will have this defense prepared because if his unit gives up big plays once again, there’s going to be even more questions than there already is.
