When you think about the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Josh Allen is one of the first two or three names mentioned, and everyone knows how special he is for the Buffalo Bills. Allen has played in every game from his second year and on, having only missed a few games in his rookie season with an elbow injury.
Bills fans have been extremely lucky with the fact that Allen has been durable throughout his career, especially when you think about how he plays the game. For a quarterback, he is very physical and he lays everything out on the line in order to help the Bills. While fans love to see it, they also hold their breath and hope that Allen doesn’t get injured.
As long as Allen is playing at a high level, the Bills will always have a shot to win any matchup that they are going into, but it’s also important to realize that anything could happen with Allen which is scary to think about as far as injury is concerned. However, it’s very true, and it makes you think what the Bills would look like without Allen under center.

Tyler Sullivan from CBS Sports reminds Bills fans that it’s not just the starting quarterback that is important, but also who the backups are, and Sullivan didn’t have great news for Bills Mafia. Sullivan recently ranked NFL contenders by backup QB situations and the Bills were ranked last on the list that featured Kyle Allen and Shane Buechele.
"Allen, who has been in the NFL since 2018, has starting experience (19 total starts), but hasn't started a game since Week 13 of the 2022 season while a member of the Houston Texans. In that game, he completed just 51.3% of his passes, tossed two interceptions, and recorded two fumbles (one lost). For his career, the 30-year-old is 7-12 as a starter, while completing 62.5% of his passes with an 82.1 passer rating." said Sullivan.
The Bills have had a revolving door of backup quarterbacks behind Josh Allen, which includes Kyle Allen, Matt Barkley, Mitchell Trubisky, and Case Keenum. Trubisky and Kyle Allen had two different tenures with the Bills in the quarterback room, but having Kyle Allen backup Josh is not an ideal setup should something happen to Josh.
The offense would look very different if Kyle Allen was under center, as he does not have the ceiling that Josh Allen has shown to have. The offense would be extremely limited, and Kyle Allen has not exactly been a solid backup throughout his career.
This is a position that doesn’t get talked about a lot because of how durable and phenomenal Allen has been. At the same time, there always has to be a thought about what the offense would look like if he wasn’t under center for whatever reason. Clearly, it wouldn’t be great at all.
