The NFL preseason is set to wrap up here very soon and before you know it, coaching staffs will have to start making decisions on who will be on the final 53-man roster heading into Week 1 of the regular season. The Buffalo Bills have had two successful games so far this season and Joe Brady’s staff will have a challenge at deciding who stays and who goes.
For the most part, the depth for the Bills has performed very well against the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns. Players who have been with the team for quite sometime, some who just joined the team in free agency and during the NFL Draft, and players who signed as undrafted free agents have all been showing off their talents.
In Buffalo’s win yesterday over the Browns, there were plenty of players who stood out on both sides of the ball. Heck, even special teams players like Tyler Bass and Tommy Doman Jr. even showed off what they could do.
On the offense, one receiver had a solid day to where he started to make a tiny but serious push for a final roster spot. That receiver is Ja’Mori Maclin, who is the cousin of former NFL wideout Jeremy Maclin.
Ja'Mori Maclin had his moment with Bills in Week 2 of preseason
Maclin finished as the Bills’ leading receiver with 108 yards, and it was only off of two catches (and two targets). However, his first reception went for 37 yards from Kyle Allen. Then in the second half, Maclin caught a pass from Shane Buchele and went 71 yards to the house for a touchdown in the third quarter. That score put the Bills up 24-7 and it was just part of the blowout by the Bills.
In the Bills’ first preseason game against the Panthers, Maclin had just one catch for nine yards which wasn’t much at all. Now with a bit of a breakout performance under his belt, he has definitely put himself on the coaching’s radar. At the same time, we know that he still has a major uphill battle with very little time left to earn a final spot.
Bills need to see another big performance by Ja'Mori Maclin
With just one more game to go before the regular season, Maclin will have one more chance to make a serious push for a roster spot. While it’s more likely that he ends up on the Bills’ practice squad, him shining against the Steelers might be exactly what he needs to make the coaching staff’s decision difficult on who to make the final receiver on the roster.
DJ Moore, Khalil Shakir, Joshua Palmer, and Keon Coleman should definitely be on the roster, but now it’s up to the final spot in that room (unless the Bills want to bring on six receivers). It’s a long shot for Maclin, but his performance against the Browns definitely earned him a chance to atleast get a little bit of consideration.
