Unlike many teams in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills have an overall filled out roster which includes quality depth, solid players, and their two stars in Josh Allen and James Cook. Heading into training camp, with all of the work that they did in the offseason, the Bills didn’t have a major weakness going into this season.
They went heavy on defense, revamping it for Jim Leonhard. Then they brought in their new No. 1 receiver with DJ Moore to help boost the offense. Oh yeah, they also drafted rookie Skyler Bell who has the chance to become great sooner than later.
Wide receiver had been the team’s biggest issue the last two seasons, but that is no longer a concern. The defense has a lot of promise under Leonhard as well. Overall, Buffalo’s biggest competition is the left guard position, which is a great spot to be in considering the fact that other teams have quarterback battles, wide receiver competitions, etc.
Bills have to solidify offensive line to protect Josh Allen
Going into the free agency period back in March, the Bills were set to lose both Connor McGovern and David Edwards, as their contracts were set to expire. The day before the league’s legal tampering period opened up, the Bills extended McGovern to a four-year deal to keep their franchise center.
This meant that Edwards was set to join another team, and he landed a four-year deal with the New Orleans Saints. With his departure, the Bills now need to find his replacement at left guard. Alaina Getzenberg from ESPN has revealed who looks to be in the lead right now for that spot.
According to Getzenberg, who believes that the left guard position is Buffalo's biggest training competition, Austin Corbett "remains in the lead for the open spot on the line" but mentioned that Alec Anderson already has experience with the offense.
"Bills general manager Brandon Beane emphasized the importance of this competition on the first day of camp, saying "[left guard is] a premium spot that we need to make sure we're good there. The No. 1 thing is to protect No. 17 [quarterback Josh Allen]." Veteran free agent addition Austin Corbett remains in the lead for the open spot on the line, but he is competing with Alec Anderson, who has experience with the offense." said Getzenberg.
Bills fans get intel on early competition for LG spot
The Bills signed Corbett, who has played for the Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns, and Carolina Panthers throughout his career. He has played center for a majority of his career, but obviously he won't be playing center in Buffalo as that is McGovern's spot. However, he brings starting experience that the Bills could heavily benefit from to help keep the protection for Allen.
As for Anderson, he does have the edge over Corbett in terms of already having been in Buffalo for a few seasons, and he's been brought in as an extra blocker in jumbo packages. He can play any position on the line as well, which gives him the versatility for Pat Meyer and Pete Carmichael Jr.
As training camp continues along, and preseason games happen, Bills fans will be able to see who is the better option for the starting left guard position and making sure that they help Allen stay upright.
